Common Errors in SEO Approaches

There are many mistakes that a website may commit according to recent survey from SEO Experts Singapore. It’s hard to learn from all of the mistakes, but you can still find out way to avoid the most common ones. Prevention is better than cure.

1.Website is blocked by Robots.txt

Blocking websites by using Robots.txt is quite easy. If you can’t find your websites on the searching results for a long time, firstly you have to check file robots.txt in the website (if any) whether it contains the following command:

Disallow:/

If yes, your website has been blocked, hence the search engine can’t visit anywhere in your sites.

2.Website is blocked by Meta Robots

Websites are also be blocked by Meta robots Tags. If your site has the same symptom as the first one that it disappears for a long time on searching results and search engines cannot find out your sites, check the availability of the following command in its Meta Robot Tags:

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow” />

3.Mistakes of Canonical Tags

Canonical Tag has been used since 2009. Search engines use this tool to deal with the overlapping content.

This tag is highly evaluated by search engines, which will affect the ranking of your website or even make it disappear in the searching results if there is misuse.

Some common mistakes of Canonical Tags:

•There is more than one canonical tag in one website.

•The canonical tags of all sites at the same time link to homepage.

Ways to check the canonical tags:

•Check the source code of that site (CTRL + U on Chrome, CMD+U on Macbook)

•Find out canonical tags (CTRL + F)

4.Redirect homepage
When creating a new website to replace the old one, perhaps you are used to redirecting all the previous websites to new site. SEO Company in Singapore suggests that SEO consultants have to stop your clients from doing that.

Instead, you had better redirect each of the subpages one after another to the new site, which ensures the link equity and traffic to subpages on new website. This is very helpful to ranking of the new website.

5.301 redirect String

301 Redirect string will also strip your site of top rank. How does it work? URL 1 (START) is redirected to URL 2 (OLD), and then URL 2 is redirected to URL 3 (NEW). Have a look at the illustration below:

Correct technique should be: Keep the 301 redirecting from OLD to NEW. However, Start should be redirected to NEW to ensure the equity of that link. Have a look at the following illustration:

6.Moving URLs (302s vs 301s)

Once you move a website to a new domain, or there is a new URL, web designers may sometimes apply 302 redirects instead of 301. As you may know, the 302 means “the resource is moved temporarily moved to a new location”, while the 301 means “be moved permanently”.

With 302, new website will not receive link equity from the old one. In addition, ranking and traffic to website will decrease if you use 302 instead of 301.

7.Non-static URLs

Non-static URLs, especially URL that uses parameters to identify users may create content duplicate, which usually happens to large website. Hence, you had better use static URLs for all of your websites anytime possible. Stay away from types of parameters.

8.No sitemap

Many website commit the mistake of no XML sitemap. Make sure to learn how to create and send sitemap to search engine.

How do you check if there is sitemap?

•Check file robots.txt (located at : domain.com/robots.txt)

•Find in Google by using command “site:domain.com inurl:sitemap.xml”. If there is no reply, that website does not have a sitemap.
